Report a dead tree

Dead Tree

Unfortunate Result from Summer

The drought conditions have stressed trees all over the Bryan area.  BTU is encouraging its customers to report any dead trees that could pose a threat to power lines.

BTU will assess reported concerns and consider cutting down or topping (reducing the height) the affected trees if they are posing a threat to the company’s electrical delivery equipment.  If BTU cuts down or tops a tree free of cost, the property owner will be responsible for disposing of the debris left on the site.

To report a dead tree posing a threat to a power line, customers should call BTU at 979.821.5873 or http://www.btutilities.com under “Report a Hazard Tree” in the QuickLinks section.  A company representative will inspect the tree to determine if it should be cut down or topped.  A topped tree will be cut low enough to permit the remainder of the tree to be cut down by the owner without threatening the lines.  Customers should never attempt to remove or trim any tree next to a power line by themselves.

Tree contact with power lines is a common cause of power outages.  To maintain safety and electric reliability, right-of-way trees on BTU’s 2,000 miles of electric lines are on a maintenance trim schedules and are regularly monitored by BTU.

The location is less than a mile away from Haswell Memorial Park and Fannin Elementary School.
That makes the neighborhood a drug free zone and the charges much more serious.

“Feel a little better, knowing that they ain’t there,.” said Edward Yeomans, a Bryan resident.

Yeomans is talking about his three next door neighbors, who at the house on 1006 Burt Street in Bryan.

“This is a pretty close neighborhood. I don’t know everyone’s names, but I do know them by face, I know where they live and every now and then we’ll be walking down the road and stop and talk,” Yeomans said.

Bryan police and several other task forces got a tip this location was a meth lab.

37 year-old Randolph Miller, 29 year-old Jessica Najvar and Reynaldo Rios Jr, who is 26, are being held for possession of a controlled substance in a drug free zone.
Rios is also facing several other charges including tampering with evidence and evading arrest.

Yeomans said, “I seen the red lights through my bedroom window and I came out here and saw all the cop cars, swat and all that.”

A special DPS investigations group came into town from Houston to clear out and test the hazardous chemicals found inside, some did test positive for methamphetamines.

“Yeah, there were people coming and going all the time, but it was quiet,” Yeomans said.

He has lived on this street for 14 years and says he’s happy he and his neighbors are no longer breathing in dangerous chemicals.

Yeomans added, “I don’t like it next door and I’m glad it’s gone.”

All the suspects arrested have pretty lengthy criminal histories.

Rios has four assault charges.
Miller has five previous drug possession arrests, theft and engaging in organized criminal activity.
Najvar has three drug possession charges, plus evading arrest.

All the suspects remain in the Brazos County Jail.
Bond for Najvar has not been set yet.
